Mrs. Meredith Perry ~ Assistant Principal

The power of education is skipping stones on a placid lake. Aided by knowledge acquisition and the passage of time, education’s dispersion starts localized and then expands to encompass a larger surface area. What begins as impacting an individual psyche can, in turn, create dramatic ripple effects that transform a collective experience. This is my third year at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot (BSH), and I am honored to be here. After 20 years working in the field of education, I believe individuals possess the innate desire to grow professionally and personally. Education provides the confidence needed to strengthen one’s self-efficacy, intellectually and emotionally. On a personal note, Catholicism grounds me and nurtures my mind, body, and spirit. Therefore, it is a gift to have the opportunity to blend my faith and experience in education to support BSH students and faculty to “be who they are meant to be” (BSH Vision Statement) and witness the positive ripple effects that emerge at BSH as we all work authentically together as a team.

hickey_sue

Mrs. Sue Hickey ~ Director of Development

Our family has called BSH home since 2007. Each of our kids became Knights in preschool, and have either graduated or are currently working their way through the upper school. I am honored to say that I have held the position of Director of Development since 2019.

I grew up in Connecticut and moved down south to attend JMU – Go Dukes! I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance. In my ‘previous life’ I taught various disciplines of dance and worked in stage management and light design and loved every minute of it.  My husband, Scott, and I met while at JMU. After college we moved to Richmond, got married, had our first child a few years later, and then moved out to Goochland where we have been ever since.

I have actively volunteered at school since our kids were little. I started out helping with class parties, became a room parent, then joined uKnighted, where I eventually served as President for several years. Fundraising events like winter auctions and Beef & Music began calling my name during that time, and I have been working on them ever since. My volunteer years at BSH were some of the best – getting to know and work with the families, students, and teachers was extremely rewarding, and it was where I found my BSH family.

Mrs. Debbie Thompson ~ Music

My ‘lifesong sings’ by having invested over four and a half decades teaching music and instilling a love of music to children and youth so that each student may recognize, develop and realize their musical potential. Teaching public school music in Indiana, Ohio, Chesterfield County, VA, two classical, Christian RVA schools as well as serving in church music ministry positions has prepared me well for teaching at BSH. Go KNIGHTS! The lyrics of ‘our’ Alma Mater–”two that now are one” ring special significance for me in that my husband, Rob Thompson, graduated from Huguenot Academy.
A native ‘Hoosier’, I graduated with majors in voice, music education as well as a minor in piano from what is now the University of Indianapolis. I have studied choral conducting and music education methodologies at the graduate level at Butler University and school administration at VCU. My performance pursuits as a musician include singing in professional choral groups associated with the University of Richmond as well as directing and accompanying choirs in local churches and groups.
On a personal note, I am a wife, proud mother of two grown sons and two grown stepsons, grandmother to four girls and loving ‘mom’ to ‘Henry’ our boykin spaniel mutt! Rob and I reside in a historical cottage built beside a beautiful pond on a 7 acre property near the Foundry Golf Course and Fine Creek Mills in Powhatan.

Dr. James Frazier ~ Math

I received my undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Kansas, moved to Virginia Tech where I received a Masters in Synthesis of Natural Products, a PhD in Analytical Chemistry of Super-Critical Fluids and met my lovely wife, Ruth. Post-graduation I took a job in the Pharmaceutical Industry and worked for American Cyanamid and Schering Plough in New Jersey.

We eventually moved back to Virginia where I had the privilege of leading global analytical sciences for Pfizer Consumer Healthcare and GSK Consumer Healthcare. I have been associated with BSH for over 25 years before joining to teach mathematics – my wife is a teacher, both of my children attended BSH from Pre-K through 12 and I served on the Board of Advisors at BSH for multiple years.

My parents instilled in me the importance of a solid, well-rounded education, including science, math, literature, and the arts. Having hired hundreds of individuals throughout my career, I truly understand the need for an excellent and balanced education. I love teaching and made a decision to take early retirement to pursue that passion at BSH where I hope to make a difference.
BSH is a very special place where the teachers and students have a very symbiotic relationship that leads to an incredible education as well as a student population that understands the interconnection between multiple aspects of life.

Mrs. Martha O’Brien ~ English, Drama

My name is Martha O’Brien, and I am an English teacher and drama director at Blessed Sacrament – Huguenot. After six years of retirement, I am returning to BSH and looking forward to being back in the classroom.

I grew up in Greenville, North Carolina and moved to Richmond when I was in the eighth grade. I graduated from Sweet Briar College with a degree in English and also attended The University of Exeter in England for two years (where my favorite author, J.K. Rowling also attended!).

I have always loved drama (as my family will readily attest!) and have been involved in theatre productions throughout my school days as well as my teaching ones. Travel and art are two of my other passions, and I never go anywhere without a book to read because reading is as essential to me as the air that I breathe.

My husband Tom and I live in Midlothian with two demanding dogs, Guinness and Luna Lovegood, and a very aloof cat called Mrs. Miniver. Our son Toby graduated from BSH in 2010, graduated from college with an acting degree from The Conservatory at Shenandoah University, and is now living in New Orleans where he is pursuing his music career.

I am looking forward to an exciting school year both in the classroom as well as on the stage!

It is there that I met my future husband who happened to be a BSH alum. I furthered my educational journey by earning a Master of Arts in Teaching from UNC Charlotte.

My husband and I have two adorable cats that love to help me grade papers and read books. Having grown up in a private K-12 community I am blessed beyond measure to now teach at one, as I can say firsthand how this type of environment will foster lifelong success. Go Knights!

Mrs. Lois Castillo ~ Language: Spanish

I am from Pennsylvania and went to college at Ohio Northern University where I met my future husband and graduated with a B.S. in ED. Since he is from Venezuela, he encouraged me to take some Spanish courses. I fell in love with the language and culture and finished with a major in Spanish.

After graduating, we moved to Venezuela to be near his family. This certainly helped me to be immersed in the language and culture. While living there we raised our five children and I taught EFL (English as a Foreign Language) at the binational center for over twenty years.

I relocated to Richmond, VA in 2003 to be near my children. I was hired by Chesterfield County Public Schools to teach Spanish where I taught for 14 years before coming to BSH.

In addition to my degree in Spanish, I have taken graduate work in ESL, English as a Second Language.

I love traveling and in addition to living and traveling in Venezuela, I have been to Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Germany, France, and Italy.

SALVETE, Y’ALL!

My name is Patrick Winterrowd and I am a Latin instructor, football and soccer coach here at BSH.

I am originally from Oklahoma and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a B.A. in Classical Civilizations in the summer of 2013. During my time at OU (Boomer Sooner!), I served as President for my local rugby club as well as for the local chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America. During my summer breaks, I helped to excavate spectacular Roman villas at Castellemare di Stabia and Pompeii in Italy.

In 2013, I was accepted to Florida State University, where I received two Masters Degrees, in Roman Archaeology and Latin, respectively. As part of my degrees, I went back to Italy for a fourth time, excavating a mountaintop Etruscan temple sanctuary in Cetamura del Chianti, Italy. I then spent the following year in a Phd program in Classics at the University of Virginia before arriving at BSH in the fall of 2015.

In my time at BSH, I have taught courses in Latin (1-AP) and mythology and have served as an assistant coach for both the football and soccer teams. I have performed in student plays (King Macduff in Shakespeare’s Macbeth), emceed the Homecoming Dance, sung in the student talent show, and taken students to the annual Latin Convention in Richmond, Virginia. I have also had the pleasure of helping to lead a study abroad trip during Spring Break of 2017 to Italy, and am looking forward to a further study abroad trip to Europe (location TBD) this year!

My favorite part of BSH is the community and getting to know each of my students as individuals. I love the small-school atmosphere and the way that everyone works together to achieve our collective goal of providing a well- rounded, Catholic education to our students. Welcome to our family: it’s going to be a great year! GO KNIGHTS!

Mrs. Theresa Clapper ~ Science

I am from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and earned a B.S. degree in Mathematics from the University of North Carolina in Wilmington. After moving from Covington, Virginia to Beaumont, Texas in 2000, I earned an additional degree in Math and Science Education from Lamar University. I then began my teaching career at a small, family oriented Catholic school, very similar to BSH, in which I taught Middle School Science, Mathematics, and Language Arts. This experience led me to BSH in 2017 as the Middle School Science teacher.

I am married with three grown sons and three grandchildren. Teaching is my passion, and I enjoy creating a classroom where learning science concepts can be fun as well as challenging.  Teaching students to think critically is a top priority.  When away from the classroom, I enjoy hiking, reading, and traveling with my husband. I am blessed to be a part of the BSH family.

I grew up in Powhatan and actually completed my high school years and matriculated from Huguenot Academy. My education includes a BS in biochemistry from Virginia Tech, grad school in medicinal chemistry at MCV, and I completed my PhD from Rutgers University in New Jersey in environmental analytical chemistry. After working in the pharmaceutical industry for a few years, my husband and I returned to Powhatan to help with the family farm. While in New Jersey both of our children were born. Graham and Clara graduated from BSH and are currently pursuing science PhDs with eventual focus on the environment. I started subbing at BSH in 1999 and became a full employee in 2000. Currently my classes include chemistry, dual enrollment chemistry, conceptual physics, honors physics, and AP environmental science. My husband and I are still fortunate enough to work the small family farm in Powhatan; and to teach at BSH with such awesome and inspiring people.

Coach Patrick Winterrowd

Hello Knights!

In 2013, I was accepted to Florida State University, where I received two Masters Degrees, in Roman Archaeology and Latin. As part of my degrees, I went back to Italy for a fourth time, excavating a mountaintop Etruscan temple sanctuary in Cetamura del Chianti, Italy. I then spent the following year in a Ph.D. program in Classics at the University of Virginia before arriving at BSH in the fall of 2015.

In my time at BSH, I have taught courses in Latin (1-AP) and Greek Mythology, World Mythology and Latin Medical Terminology.  I am the Defensive Coordinator for our football team, which won the D2 State Championship in the Fall 2021!  Our defense led the league in yards and points allowed that season.  I am also the Head Coach of the Soccer Team and help to direct our offseason conditioning programs.

When I am not coaching, I am involved in various extracurricular activities, including performing in school plays (MacBeth, Christmas Carol) and taking the stage as Elvis in the school talent show.  I also direct our school Latin Club, which takes annual trips to the State Latin Convention in Richmond.  I have also had the opportunity to assist Mrs. Lisa Goodwyn in directing Study Abroad trips to Italy, Spain, and France!

My favorite part of BSH is the community and getting to know each of my students as individuals. I love the small-school atmosphere and the way that everyone works together to achieve our collective goal of providing a well- rounded, Catholic education to our students. Welcome to our family: it’s going to be a great year! GO KNIGHTS!
