Meredith-Perry

Mrs. Meredith Perry ~ Assistant Principal

The power of education is skipping stones on a placid lake. Aided by knowledge acquisition and the passage of time, education’s dispersion starts localized and then expands to encompass a larger surface area. What begins as impacting an individual psyche can, in turn, create dramatic ripple effects that transform a collective experience. This is my first year at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot (BSH), and I am honored to be here. After 18 years working in the field of education, I believe individuals possess the innate desire to grow professionally and personally. Education provides the confidence needed to strengthen one’s self-efficacy, intellectually and emotionally. On a personal note, Catholicism grounds me and nurtures my mind, body, and spirit. Therefore, it is a gift to have the opportunity to blend my faith and experience in education to support BSH students and faculty to “be who they are meant to be” and witness the positive ripple effects that emerge at BSH (BSH Vision Statement).

Mrs. Sue Hickey ~ Director of Development

Our family has called BSH “home” for 12 years now. The children all began their school adventures right here in pre-school, and are currently in the 10th, 8th, 6th, and 4th grade classes. I am thrilled to be working at BSH this year to build up our Development and Alumni Departments.

I grew up in Connecticut and moved down south to attend JMU – Go Dukes! – where I met my husband, Scott. After college, we moved to Richmond, got married, had our first child, and then later moved out to Goochland, where we have been for fourteen years. What started as a new house with one kid and a couple of dogs, quickly grew to a very full house and a small farm in the backyard.

I have been actively volunteering at school since the kids were little. I started as a Room Mom, moved on to uKnighted, where I eventually served as President for a number of years, and gained many partners-in-crime along the way. Fundraising events like winter auctions and Beef & Music began calling my name during that time, and I have been working on them ever since. My youngest, before he was old enough to start school, would come to a complete stop at the threshold of Alumni House, because he knew if he went in there with mommy, it would be hours before we came out!

Mrs. Catherine Ringling ~ Asst. Director of Development & Communications Coordinator

I grew up in Meriden, CT, the youngest of six children. I attended Choate Rosemary Hall, a college prep school in Wallingford, CT, after which I attended Bates College in Lewiston, ME. For eight years, I worked for Pfizer Inc. in Groton, CT conducting Toxicology Studies, during which time I met my husband Justin. In 2012, we moved to Powhatan, VA from Rhode Island along with our two children, Tyler and Tabitha. Tabitha has attended BSH since the 2nd grade and will be in 9th grade this year. Tyer is in his last semester at Longwood University.

I am a parishioner at St. John Neumann Catholic Church where I am also a member of their choir as well as a cantor. I enjoy traveling with my husband and going to the beach with family and friends. I enjoy spending time with my German Shepherd dog, Lucy, and our family’s 11 chickens: Kinkajou, Glacier, Tiger Claw, Nix, Yennifer, Froshe, Arya, Scottie, Siri, Moonwatcher and Chrissy.

leighty_glennis

Mrs. Glennis Leight ~ Music

Although many people think they are musically impaired, we are all musical to some degree. Even before babies can talk, they respond to their mother singing to them. Music surrounds us and it wrings our emotions. It is important to us. I love all kinds of music and want to give my students an appreciation for listening to different types of music whether it be a Bach Concerto or a Jazz piece by Louis Armstrong. Music can and is fun and should give students an outlet of expression. It is also a stress reducer. I want my students to not be afraid to express themselves through music. I am their sideline encouragement and their support. We have some of the best students to work with and it drives me to produce their best effort whether is singing at Mass or performing at May Day.

I have lived most of my life in Powhatan, Virginia. I graduated from Longwood College with a BME in Music Education. This is my 34th year teaching at BHS. I raised three boys who graduated from BSH and am married to Jeff Leighty. We live in Ballsville with two cats.

I am blessed to live out my dream of being a Catholic school teacher, and I am honored to be apart of the Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School’s team once again. I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education at Appalachian State University in the beautiful mountains of Boone, North Carolina. I then received my master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, with a specialization in Literacy, through Lesley University. I have eight years of public school experience and five years of private school experience. I have loved teaching, and I am excited to embark on my 13th year as a teacher. In addition to teaching second grade, my current role includes being the chairman of our school’s improvement plan and being the Literacy Coach for grades K-2. I am extremely faith and family oriented. I love my “Knight Family”, and I feel extremely fortunate to work within this exceptional community.

bowman_patricia

Mrs. Patty Bowman ~ 3rd Grade

I have had the great pleasure of teaching third graders for twenty years. Every year I meet a new class of happy and excited children who are eager to learn. It’s true we learn all about reading, writing, and arithmetic, but it is so much more! We all learn together what friendship means. We learn how to work together, share ideas, and accept one another for each of our special talents and gifts God has given us. Teaching at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot allows me to follow my students as they grow from year to year, from preschool through high school. As I watch my former third grade students graduate from High School, I am able to witness their joy and celebrate their achievements with them. I feel privileged, knowing that I have played a part in their amazing journey!

More about Mrs. Bowman…

I am from Ohio. I attended The Ohio State University in Columbus. I graduated with a B.A. in Elementary Education. My husband and I lived in Columbus for three years, during which time our first daughter was born. Our second daughter was born in a small town in central Ohio.

My husband’s job took us to Louisville, Kentucky where we lived for three years. We loved the city and enjoyed the week-long celebrations that revolved around the Kentucky Derby! Our final move brought us to Richmond where we have lived since 1988.

I came to BSH in 1999 as a third grade teacher. I love teaching third grade! The children are sweet and funny and always eager to learn. I am on the uKnighted Board and serve on various committees at BSH.

In my free time I love spending days with my two grandsons. They are all boy, so I often find myself digging in the mud or stomping through mud puddles. Of course, I am a huge Ohio State Buckeye football fan!

Mrs. Beth Yagel ~ 4th Grade

I am originally from Peoria, Illinois, but I lived in Florida for 20 years where I worked in the travel industry as a sales manager for a hotel and a tour company. About 12 years ago, we moved to Virginia to be near my husband’s family.

I graduated from Mary Baldwin College. My major was history, and I minored in Education.

Having previously taught in fifth and first grade classrooms, I feel that I have found my niche in fourth grade. I think it’s the BEST age, and I love my fourth graders.

When I’m not teaching or looking for fun things to do in the classroom, I love to sew or do other creative, crafty things. My other favorite pastime is reading, particularly historical fiction, or visiting historical places.

I teach because I love it. I teach art because art makes my heart beat faster and because I believe that art matters, that it has always mattered as a mediator of the sweeping range of human experience. I value the role of the art teacher as facilitator and awakener. And I believe that if I am doing my job well in the classroom, I am a source of encouragement every minute.Read more here: Mrs. Goodwyn’s Gallery

Martha O'Brien

Mrs. Martha O’Brien ~ English, Drama

My name is Martha O’Brien, and I am an English teacher and drama director at Blessed Sacrament – Huguenot. After six years of retirement, I am returning to BSH and looking forward to being back in the classroom.

I grew up in Greenville, North Carolina and moved to Richmond when I was in the eighth grade. I graduated from Sweet Briar College with a degree in English and also attended The University of Exeter in England for two years (where my favorite author, J.K. Rowling also attended!).

I have always loved drama (as my family will readily attest!) and have been involved in theatre productions throughout my school days as well as my teaching ones. Travel and art are two of my other passions, and I never go anywhere without a book to read because reading is as essential to me as the air that I breathe.

My husband Tom and I live in Midlothian with two demanding dogs, Guinness and Luna Lovegood, and a very aloof cat called Mrs. Miniver. Our son Toby graduated from BSH in 2010, graduated from college with an acting degree from The Conservatory at Shenandoah University, and is now living in New Orleans where he is pursuing his music career.

I am looking forward to an exciting school year both in the classroom as well as on the stage!

I am from Pennsylvania and went to college at Ohio Northern University where I met my future husband and graduated with a B.S. in ED. Since he is from Venezuela, he encouraged me to take some Spanish courses. I fell in love with the language and culture and finished with a major in Spanish.

After graduating, we moved to Venezuela to be near his family. This certainly helped me to be immersed in the language and culture. While living there we raised our five children and I taught EFL (English as a Foreign Language) at the binational center for over twenty years.

I love traveling and in addition to living and traveling in Venezuela, I have been to Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Germany, Paris and Italy.

My favorite part of BSH is the community and getting to know each of my students as individuals. I love the small-school atmosphere and the way that everyone works together to achieve our collective goal of providing a well- rounded, Catholic education to our students.
