Athletics Philosophy

Athletic excellence is a tradition at Blessed Sacrament. At the same time, our athletics program is geared towards personal improvement and building character traits like hard work, discipline, respect, cooperation and commitment that will benefit students on the field, in the classroom and in life.

We feel that each student deserves the opportunity to be on the team. Whether on the field, mound, court or pool, athletics’ purpose is to promote teamwork, internal and external motivation, physical development, and love of school and sports.

Over 75% of our high school students play 2 or more sports each year. Not only that, but in the past ten years, we’ve won seven State Championship Titles. Right now, our graduates are competing at Elon, Shenandoah, Randolph College, Randolph Macon College, Emory and Henry College, and Hampden-Sydney College. Interscholastic competition is available for students beginning in 5th grade with many of our graduates continuing on to play at the collegiate level. (link to Alumni Athletes)

We like to say, Blessed Sacrament Huguenot is also in the business of making champions.

Coaching Staff

Mrs. Catherine Ringling ~ Asst. Director of Development, Communications Coordinator & Volleyball Coach

I grew up in Meriden, CT, the youngest of six children. I attended Choate Rosemary Hall, a college prep school in Wallingford, CT, after which I attended Bates College in Lewiston, ME. I earned a B.S. in Chemistry and was a member of the Bates Women’s Varsity Volleyball team all four of my years. Go Bobcats!

For eight years, I worked for Pfizer Inc. in Groton, CT conducting Toxicology Studies, during which time I met my husband Justin. In 2012, we moved to Powhatan, VA from Rhode Island along with our two children, Tyler and Tabitha. Tabitha has attended BSH since the 2nd grade and will be in 1th grade this year.

I am a parishioner at St. John Neumann Catholic Church where I am also a member of their choir as well as a cantor. I enjoy traveling with my husband and going to the beach with family and friends. I enjoy spending time with my German Shepherd dog, Lucy, and our family’s 10 chickens: Kinkajou, Glacier, TigerClaw, Nyx, Yennefer, Frosch, Arya, Skadi, Ciri, and Shalltear.

Mr. James Poore ~ Director of Athletics, Social Studies

I grew up in Amelia County on a farm and attended Hampden Sydney College where I majored in History and played baseball. While at Hampden Sydney College, I also participated in the Glee Club and was the school mascot during basketball season. I was known as the “Bleacher Creature.” I have spent 25 years on the BSH campus as both a student and as a teacher and have loved every minute of it. I currently reside in Amelia with my wife Lindsey and our two children Willie and Avery, both of whom attend BSH. I enjoy playing and coaching sports as well as rooting for my favorite teams.

Mr. Grayson Lovern ~ Athletics Coordinator, Social Studies (Social Studies Department Chair)

I grew up in Winder, Georgia, just outside of Athens. I had the privilege of attending the University of Georgia from 2007 to 2013, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in Religion and a Master of Arts in Teaching Social Studies Education. I am entering my sixth year at BSH having taught a variety of subjects within the Social Studies Department. This year I will be teaching 10th grade World History II and Honors World History II, AP United States History, and AP United States Government. In addition to teaching, I serve as the school’s Technology Coordinator and Athletics Coordinator.
