Athletics Philosophy

Athletic excellence is a tradition at Blessed Sacrament. At the same time, our athletics program is geared towards personal improvement and building character traits like hard work, discipline, respect, cooperation and commitment that will benefit students on the field, in the classroom and in life.

We feel that each student deserves the opportunity to be on the team. Whether on the field, mound, court or pool, athletics’ purpose is to promote teamwork, internal and external motivation, physical development, and love of school and sports.

Over 75% of our high school students play 2 or more sports each year. Not only that, but in the past ten years, we’ve won seven State Championship Titles. Right now, our graduates are competing at Elon, Shenandoah, Randolph College, Randolph Macon College, Emory and Henry College, and Hampden-Sydney College. Interscholastic competition is available for students beginning in 5th grade with many of our graduates continuing on to play at the collegiate level. (link to Alumni Athletes)

We like to say, Blessed Sacrament Huguenot is also in the business of making champions.

Coaching Staff

Coach Patrick Winterrowd

Hello Knights!

My name is Patrick Winterrowd and I am a Latin instructor, football and soccer coach here at BSH.

I am originally from Oklahoma and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a B.A. in Classical Civilizations in the summer of 2013. During my time at OU (Boomer Sooner!), I served as President for my local rugby club as well as for the local chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America. During my summer breaks, I helped to excavate spectacular Roman villas at Castellemare di Stabia and Pompeii in Italy.

In 2013, I was accepted to Florida State University, where I received two Masters Degrees, in Roman Archaeology and Latin. As part of my degrees, I went back to Italy for a fourth time, excavating a mountaintop Etruscan temple sanctuary in Cetamura del Chianti, Italy. I then spent the following year in a Ph.D. program in Classics at the University of Virginia before arriving at BSH in the fall of 2015.

In my time at BSH, I have taught courses in Latin (1-AP) and Greek Mythology, World Mythology and Latin Medical Terminology.  I am the Defensive Coordinator for our football team, which won the D2 State Championship in the Fall 2021!  Our defense led the league in yards and points allowed that season.  I am also the Head Coach of the Soccer Team and help to direct our offseason conditioning programs.

When I am not coaching, I am involved in various extracurricular activities, including performing in school plays (MacBeth, Christmas Carol) and taking the stage as Elvis in the school talent show.  I also direct our school Latin Club, which takes annual trips to the State Latin Convention in Richmond.  I have also had the opportunity to assist Mrs. Lisa Goodwyn in directing Study Abroad trips to Italy, Spain, and France!

My favorite part of BSH is the community and getting to know each of my students as individuals. I love the small-school atmosphere and the way that everyone works together to achieve our collective goal of providing a well- rounded, Catholic education to our students. Welcome to our family: it’s going to be a great year! GO KNIGHTS!
